thumbnail Plein Air is French for "In the open air" and refers to paintings that are painted on location under the open sky in the sun (and the wind and rain and snow, with bugs and bats and bears.) One also enjoys soaring eagles, running salmon, skunk dens, porcupines, flying osprey with fish in their talons, rattle snakes and grazing deer. All of this serves to create a kind of heightened reality. That is what makes it so exciting. There is never a dull moment. But there is always a sense of peace within nature. Being out there is a gift. I love it. Plein Air painting lets me practice one of my three favorite mottos: "When in doubt go out." The other two mottos being: "When in doubt, leave it out." And, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." This last one applies to a whole lot in life.
